Choose Tense from Context
Select tense forms using time markers and the status of each idea, then explain why a historical event and a current interpretation use different forms.
Worked classroom example
History
“The alliance formed in 1914” reports a completed event; “Historians debate its importance” describes an ongoing discussion.
Teaching sequence
- Prepare a short account of a 1914 event with a present-day historical interpretation. Introduce choose tense from context with one clear success criterion: select tense forms using time markers and the status of each idea, then explain why a historical event and a current interpretation use different forms.
- Model one short example from a timeline with past events and present interpretations. Think aloud about the language choice and the subject evidence; invite learners to test the example with a partner.
- Learners apply the move to a new piece of History content. Use the prompt “Which words locate the event, and which describe a present view?” to check whether their language matches their evidence.
- Collect one independent response. Give a new pair of sentences and check time reference as well as verb form. Record one next step and adjust the scaffold to what this response shows.
Try it tomorrow
Select tense forms using time markers and the status of each idea, then explain why a historical event and a current interpretation use different forms.
Independent check
Give a new pair of sentences and check time reference as well as verb form.
Scaffold built into this activity: More scaffold
Place event cards on a timeline and underline time markers before choosing a verb.
Teacher language
“Which words locate the event, and which describe a present view?”
Ask learners to point to the evidence, wording or feature behind their answer. Give thinking time before inviting a revision.
Adjust the support
More support
Place event cards on a timeline and underline time markers before choosing a verb.
Greater independence
Remove the time words and ask learners to justify tense from context alone.
Use the response to choose the next step; the scaffold label describes this activity design, not the learner.
