Teaching listening

Give listening a purpose and manage its load.

A useful teaching sequence

  1. Set one accessible listening purpose and arrange captions, transcript or other required access.
  2. Begin with the main message when appropriate, then use focused replays for evidence or language.
  3. Model short notes that preserve units, negatives and qualifiers.
  4. Reconstruct meaning on fresh content and ask what helped; do not equate copied words with understanding.

Heard message

The temperature did not rise above 30 °C.

Useful note

Temperature ≤ 30 °C

Meaning error to reject

Temperature rose by 30 °C.

Try it in the next lesson

Listen to a brief statement twice, with a different purpose each time. Compare notes, explain one meaning-changing detail, then test a fresh statement.

Notice and respond to a common difficulty

The learner misses the next idea while copying a complete sentence. Shorten the chunk and model a keyword note. Required captions are access, not a reward to remove.

Language support and independent evidence

Use a small word bank, a brief model, visual support and rehearsal where needed. Learners can demonstrate subject knowledge through a home language or another mode. Review fresh task evidence in this skill before adjusting a proficiency judgment.
