Read the Qualification
Underline the condition word, state the limit it sets and rewrite a conclusion so it does not go beyond the evidence.
Worked classroom example
Science
“The metal strip expanded when heated above 60°C.” This supports expansion under that condition; it does not show what happens below 60°C.
Teaching sequence
- Prepare a short investigation paragraph with one result and a condition. Introduce read the qualification with one clear success criterion: underline the condition word, state the limit it sets and rewrite a conclusion so it does not go beyond the evidence.
- Model one short example from temperature change. Think aloud about the language choice and the subject evidence; invite learners to test the example with a partner.
- Learners apply the move to a new piece of Science content. Use the prompt “Which words tell us when this result applies?” to check whether their language matches their evidence.
- Collect one independent response. Check that the rewritten conclusion keeps the condition and uses the evidence accurately. Record one next step and adjust the scaffold to what this response shows.
Try it tomorrow
Underline the condition word, state the limit it sets and rewrite a conclusion so it does not go beyond the evidence.
Independent check
Check that the rewritten conclusion keeps the condition and uses the evidence accurately.
Scaffold built into this activity: More scaffold
Pair a visual condition card with the sentence and offer a frame: “This applies when…”.
Teacher language
“Which words tell us when this result applies?”
Ask learners to point to the evidence, wording or feature behind their answer. Give thinking time before inviting a revision.
Adjust the support
More support
Pair a visual condition card with the sentence and offer a frame: “This applies when…”.
Greater independence
Remove the frame and add a second result with a different condition.
Use the response to choose the next step; the scaffold label describes this activity design, not the learner.
