Review the partnership with evidence

Use a short reflection cycle to improve co-planning, delivery and co-assessment.

Step 1

Gather a manageable sample

Choose three or four anonymised responses and one observation focus, such as who uses the explanation frame independently. Record the support each learner received.

Step 2

Reflect separately, then compare

Ask what worked, what was difficult and what helped EAL learners participate. Compare planning meetings, lesson delivery, assessment and post-lesson review. Separate observed events from assumptions.

Step 3

Review six dimensions

Discuss roles and relationships; attitudes and expectations; planning and development; delivery; assessment; and evaluation of effectiveness. For each, name evidence and one possible next step. This is a conversation aid, not a validated score or league table.

Step 4

Commit to one change

Choose a feasible action, an owner, support needed and a review date. Compare learner work after the change before deciding whether to keep it.

Step 5

Protect time and share useful practice

Use a brief weekly review and a longer termly meeting. Bank anonymised exemplars with context and supports. Invite a focused peer observation when the team wants a model of parity or a different teaching arrangement.

Worked classroom example

Finding: The whole class completed the organiser, but two sampled learners could not explain the source comparison without prompts.

Next action: Use parallel groups for oral rehearsal before writing. Both teachers model the same evidence language. Collect an individual comparison at the end and revisit it together on Friday.

Review questions: What did learners understand? What English could they use? Which support made a difference? What can they now do independently?

Share the work

Both teachers bring learner evidence, reflect on their own contribution and agree the next action. Programme leaders protect planning time and respond to recurring workload or training needs.

Evidence to look for: The review ends with a specific change and a date, rather than only a statement that the lesson went well.
