Two worked beginner lessons: daily routines.

Goal: learners describe another person’s routine using familiar third-person present-simple verbs. Context: a fictional classmate’s week. Model: Maya walks to school. She plays football. She watches TV after dinner. Adapt the examples to your learners’ lives.

Inductive route: examples → noticing → clarification

Begin with a picture sequence and short sentences. Let learners investigate one manageable contrast.

  1. Establish the routine using pictures and familiar words. Show I walk to school alongside Maya walks to school.
  2. Ask: Who is I? Who is Maya? Underline the verb. What changes? Provide a choice or colour cue if needed.
  3. Confirm the pattern with he/she/it and familiar verbs. Model the pronunciation of walks, plays and watches.
  4. Use a short matching or completion task, then check meaning as well as the ending.
  5. Learners describe a fictional person’s routine from pictures. Finish with one independent sentence.

Deductive route: clarification → examples → practice

Begin with the same meaningful context, then explain the pattern clearly before learners practise it.

  1. Show the weekly routine and model Maya walks to school.
  2. Give a brief explanation: For he, she or it in these routine statements, the verb changes: walk → walks; play → plays; watch → watches.
  3. Check the routine meaning using the calendar, then model the sentence’s pronunciation.
  4. Give a short supported practice task and compare answers using the pattern.
  5. Use the same picture-based speaking task and independent exit sentence as in the inductive lesson.

What to assess in both routes: Does the learner communicate a routine? Is the subject–verb form appropriate? Can they produce a fresh example without copying the model? If not, identify whether the barrier is meaning, form, sound, vocabulary or task instructions.
