Read qualifications with care

Level is not the same as award size. DELTA and DipTESOL are advanced diplomas, not complete master’s degrees. TKT tests teaching knowledge; it is not an observed-practice award. Completing a NILE short course does not automatically confer a Trinity or Cambridge award.

School teaching: check the professional registration required by your intended country and sector. A TESOL certificate or academic master’s is not automatically a school teaching licence. Some bachelor’s or teacher-education programmes have separate professional outcomes. Cambridge recognition guidance ↗

How the different training routes work

Different routes, different purposes

Explore EAL-related learning from a short course to a degree. CELTA, DELTA and Trinity awards sit alongside school-focused programmes such as TEMC, provider CPD and university study. Each can be useful for a different professional goal.

Provider, award and teaching licence are separate questions. NILE delivers several different courses and qualifications. Trinity College London awards qualifications delivered through validated providers. A degree title, an RQF level or international use does not by itself establish school-teacher licensing eligibility.

Start with the work you want to do

  • Beginning English language teaching: compare CELTA, CertTESOL and foundation certificate routes, including real teaching practice.
  • Supporting multilingual learners in subject lessons: explore TEMC and school-focused EAL professional learning.
  • Developing a specialism: compare TYLEC, CertPT, TKT specialist modules and focused NILE courses.
  • Deepening experienced practice: compare DELTA, DipTESOL and relevant postgraduate degrees.
  • Studying for a degree: compare language/linguistics bachelor’s degrees, TESOL master’s degrees and education routes with language interests. Check whether professional training is included or optional.

These are starting points for enquiry, not rankings or admission decisions. The university examples are a selected directory, not an exhaustive list or endorsement.
