Worked example

One partner explains a solution aloud. The listener records the key quantities, units and steps, then reconstructs the method before checking the notes with the speaker.

Use this example to make the language move visible. Select subject content appropriate to the class’s age and prior knowledge.

Teaching sequence

1. Prepare a partner explanation and identify exactly what learners need to hear for Note a Partner’s Key Points. State the listening purpose and model how to capture one useful clue without transcribing everything.
2. Learners listen for the target: Record the requested spoken detail, compare notes and explain which oral clue supports the response Use purposeful sections, a second listen for the detail and a brief comparison of notes.

Use shorter chunks, purposeful replay and keyword notes. Retain captions, transcripts or other required access arrangements. Allow familiar-language notes or another response mode when checking subject understanding.

Greater independence

Change the content, evidence or audience. Remove the completed model and ask learners to explain a choice. Increase subject complexity only when it fits the curriculum and prior knowledge.

If subject meaning is insecure, reteach the concept. If the concept is understood but the English is unclear, model one useful language relationship and invite a fresh response.
