Identify whether a spoken review mainly describes or persuades.

Use this example to make the language move visible. Select subject content appropriate to the class’s age and prior knowledge.

Teaching sequence

1. Prepare a short announcement or explanation and share the purpose: identifying purpose. Keep the source or subject question visible.
2. Choose whether the speaker is explaining, persuading, instructing or reporting. Cite one phrase that signals the purpose.
3. Ask learners to show the clue, language choice or evidence they used. Invite one partner to check it, then finish with an independent response.
