Model clinic
Compare a draft with a stronger version. Less effective: The result was different. Maybe we made a mistake.
More effective: Trial 3 produced a lower reading than the others. Repeating the measurement would help test whether this is variation or an anomaly.
The report describes evidence cautiously and suggests a valid check.
How the text works
Purpose, shape and language. Purpose: Record an investigation so methods and findings can be understood
Common forms: Science practical, controlled investigation
Typical structure: Question → method → results → interpretation → conclusion and limitations
Language features: Past tense for method; precise quantities; passive where agent is unimportant; data language
Tone and register: Objective, precise and cautious; claims should match the data.
Teaching guidance Keep observation separate from explanation. Label tables and figures and refer to them in the text.
Quick learner checklist □ The opening makes the purpose clear: Record an investigation so methods and findings can be understood. □ Each part has a clear place and moves the reader towards the purpose. □ The language features, tone and level of formality fit the reader and situation. □ I have checked the details, paragraphing and punctuation before sharing.
Bring it into a lesson
Teach the choices. Use a short model. Have learners notice the audience, purpose and structure, then borrow one feature in a small, low-stakes draft. Compare versions and ask what changed for the reader.
