Argument

Persuade through a clear claim and relevant reasons. Explore its shape, language, tone and register, then switch the advice to fit your curriculum context.

Model clinic

Compare a draft with a stronger version.

Less effective: School uniforms are good because they are.

More effective: A uniform policy can reduce visible clothing differences, although it does not remove every cost. Schools should offer discreet support to families who need it.

A claim is supported with reasoning and a qualification.

How the text works

Purpose, shape and language.

Purpose: Persuade through a clear claim and relevant reasons

Common forms: Essay, debate case, policy response

Typical structure: Issue → claim → reason and evidence paragraphs → counterpoint → conclusion

Language features: Thesis language; evidence; causal links; concession and rebuttal

Tone and register: Confident but fair; formal academic register avoids personal attacks and unsupported certainty.

Teaching guidance

Write the claim in one sentence first. Match each reason with evidence and explain how it supports the claim.
